He was in Berlin at the celebration of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Germany. With the sound of marches in the background, he made the most important statement of the post-war life: <\/span><b>\u201cWe like German people, but we don&#8217;t like fascists\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After the Soviet Union had collapsed and the Iron Curtain had fallen revealing the new <\/span><b>world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Germany (!) to us, these words became relevant in a new way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had recently come back from Germany \u2014 I had a few exhibitions there. An acquaintance of mine got married to a German and was going to move to Germany, and lots of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our women<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would like to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our German friends often came to visit us\u2026 A new era had come: new countries and new history; the images from Soviet movies failed to work as before and the new era \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demanded<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d stepping out of the past. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was time to seek a new identity<\/span><\/i> <b><i>(in 1992 I went to the Forum in Graz with a lecture* on \u201cIdentity\u201d)<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And I <\/span><b><i>remember<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.7.7&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;14px&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;6px||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px|30px|20px|30px|false|false&#8221; text_orientation_tablet=&#8221;left&#8221; text_orientation_phone=&#8221;&#8221; text_orientation_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 It was two of us, my mother and me. I was alarmed at her persistent panic. She was <\/span><b><i>really<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worried, but we made it. In October 1941, we went to Kirov in the freight car of one of the last trains provided by the Malyshev Factory where she worked. In a few weeks, the Germans entered Kharkiv.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 We came back home three years later. I saw imprisoned Germans being led down Krasin street just near our house. The imprisoned Germans worked on rebuilding the ruined city of Kharkiv for ten years after the war ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 \u201cA Ukrainian father, a\u00a0 Jewish mother\u201d \u2014 that was what I wrote on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autobiographical photos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1982. In 1997, I presented them at a group exhibition in the Palace of Students of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 \u201cPerestroika\u201d: a lot was revealed, previously secret information and documents were printed, including the war-related documents \u2014 a shocking reminder of the secret part of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peace treaty<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with Germany<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact). And I also remember the information that was revealed during the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thaw<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1993<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: for the music festival dedicated to Mendelssohn**, I went to the synagogue and shot a series of self-portraits in profile&#8230; I remember that once at a station, far in the Urals, boys pulled my nose and asked, &#8220;Are you a Muscovite or a Jew?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.7.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; text_orientation_tablet=&#8221;left&#8221; text_orientation_phone=&#8221;&#8221; text_orientation_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an incentive moment, the Yeltsin&#8217;s speech, and there is a moment in which everything seems to converge: both memory and personal reactions (to the pact, etc.). By the latter, I mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the news about German uniforms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be hired for shooting. And this evokes associations coming from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the memory, from the culture, from the cinema and from life.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then we had that backpack with a German uniform at home. A friend, Sergiy Ilyin, collected military uniforms, and I asked if he could bring one for me to try to take photos with it on: <\/span><b>&#8220;Would I have a different profile if I were a German?&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">began to do the work<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which everything was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">close <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to me personally, and I had a good idea of what I wanted to talk about: it was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the time of transition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it was necessary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to translate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one concept of a German into another in our minds, change the old attitudes to completely <\/span><b>opposite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ones, as the dialectics of life required. Maneuvering, as if through a minefield, between the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">landmarks of historical memory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I needed to pay tribute to the past, and overcome it in order to move on to the present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideas are born in one head, but it&#8217;s good to have a like-minded person nearby<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vita got enthusiastic over that topic, which was also close to her:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.7.7&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;14px&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;6px||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px|30px|20px|30px|false|false&#8221; text_orientation_tablet=&#8221;left&#8221; text_orientation_phone=&#8221;&#8221; text_orientation_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her brother was born in Potsdam, her dad, a colonel, had served in Germany for 10 years after the war ended, and her mother had spent 4 years under the German occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.7.7&#8243; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; text_orientation_tablet=&#8221;left&#8221; text_orientation_phone=&#8221;&#8221; text_orientation_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was seething with ideas that I tried to translate into photography. She <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slipped <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me a volume of Goethe, from which I took quotes about \u201cthe endlessness of nature\u201d and \u201cI will not break the passion\u201d. This is where thoughts about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goethe&#8217;s illness<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came from. And by the time I returned from my trip to New York, she prepared a picture <\/span><b>\u201cyou serve, and we will wait for you\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We took photos of each other and us together. I had already used that trick in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viscosity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfinished Dissertation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In different series, texts worked in different ways: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at first, they tautologically repeated what you saw, then they became more poetic and deep, and turned into reflections on life and photography, with quotations added to them.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The captions that I prepared for this series contained all of it: the repetition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of what you saw, poetic quotes and reflections<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The main thing, however, was that they all worked on <\/span><b>duality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the duality of the statement itself and the duality of the text and visuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, I came up with captions to the photos I\u2019d already taken, but some photographs that derived from the text. For example, <\/span><b>the first two<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from which the series began: &#8220;<\/span><b>life on the lap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; (about the past occupation) and &#8220;<\/span><b>would stand on tiptoes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; (about the present life, about love). <\/span><b>Both captions appeared at once and immediately outlined the borders of the entire series: <\/b><b><i>everything that was needed had to fit between these two poles.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first tests were taken with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friend <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who gave the uniform \u2014 the photo &#8220;<\/span><b>life on the lap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;. I also took pictures of other friends who came to visit us. Because of his acting skills he sometimes overacted when portraying a German as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a hero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an enemy.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What I was looking for was a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">person<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was easy to work with him because he was good at picking up ideas. Later Sergiy Solonsky joined us: without him, the triptych \u201cSpiritual Photography\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Vita <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wouldn\u2019t exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">September 1994: we were going out of town <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reshoot pictures with a goat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film was defective, and we lost the good shots. During this trip, we shot \u201c<\/span><b>when in the endlessness of nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><b>be silent, I will not break the passion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u2014 the photos that, as for me, reflected the depth of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the German spirit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, glorified by Tannh\u00e4user. At the same time, the photos &#8220;<\/span><b>Life on the Lap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; were taken, which turned out to be the best of all tests done before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was the place where my fellow artist\u2019s sister lived. The goat was hers, and she was afraid that after the shooting, the goat would lose milk due to the stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we were about to go back home, it turned out that we wouldn\u2019t be able to return to Kharkiv that evening. <\/span><b>Because of the default on debts, the railway had the electricity cut off<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There was a piece of paper stuck to the glass of the booking office window, saying &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No trains<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b><i>rolling blackout <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means lights are out at your house in the evening,\u00a0 refrigerators defrost, and if you have an electric stove, it is impossible even to heat a kettle. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we had no idea that the railway could be left without electricity&#8230;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our whole company walked several kilometers to Bratkov&#8217;s parents, who lived nearby, and spent the night there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the morning, I was the first one to get up&#8230; Garden! Sun!\u2026 <\/span><b>Apples were lying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the ground, as if in the scenes of Dovzhenko&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earth****<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Under the trees, there were baskets of apples. I woke up the others, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I called them into the garden&#8230; and I told them to <\/span><\/i><b>undress quickly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Seryozha was in a panic \u2014\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what would his parents say<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Everyone was in a panic, but I insisted: I knew that<\/span><b> such a chance could not be missed!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I emptied the baskets and started undressing first. Seryozha also undressed. Vita ran into the house to talk with Seryozha\u2019s parents. She knew them well and had a particularly kind and warm relationship with Seryozha&#8217;s mother. Though overwhelmed with <\/span><b>shame and fear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she somehow persuaded them to stay in the house. If there had been electric trains that evening, we would not have spent the night in Yuzhnoye. And there wouldn&#8217;t have been <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such a morning, apples and an opportunity for shooting.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Getting up when the whole house is still asleep, going to the garden, seeing and feeling, waking everyone up and taking pictures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 all of this would have been <\/span><b>impossible if we had just come for a visit.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventuality <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is important in creativity! And if such an opportunity occurs, it\u2019s essential to <\/span><b>be able not to miss it. A photographer is alive as long as chance helps them!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I shot, printed samples and selected works. If I was in the frame, Vita was shooting. Sometimes Solonsky took pictures. They shot the scenes that I staged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>30 photographs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were selected from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds of printed samples<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a continued reflection of the reaction in my photography to social and political change in my life.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><b>The shooting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resembled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an amateur movie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which all the participants were friends of mine. All of them were 20-25 years younger than me, not burdened with personal memory and civic responsibility. Everyone willingly took part in these <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shootings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the participants were photographers. I tried to help them as a friend and wanted to have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my people<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at exhibitions, like musicians, who want to have their band. So I added their names when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agreeing on exhibitions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sergey Bratkov<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: before he came to me, he had not had his own <\/span><b>photographic field <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yet. He tried himself in painting, but without a specialized education he did not really succeed there. Seryozha is talented, and I, not seeing great prospects in painting, <\/span><b>pushed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">him into photography. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while working<\/span><\/i> <b>with me<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he began to create his own <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photographic field<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which he began to gradually develop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1991, at the Kharkiv <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotis-Photo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">festival, the work he did based on my design was presented. &#8220;Parcel&#8221; was a concrete cube <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with photographs walled up in it<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><b><i>Sergiy Solonsky<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was engaged in a very beautiful aesthetic photography.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And none of the two was interested in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">either social or real photography <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and did not shoot anything like that<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the same way, my <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active aggressive play with nudity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alien<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to both of them. Both, it seemed to me, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were relatively free at that time, did not really know what to do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (during the transition periods, artists in Kharkiv would lose\u00a0 perspective) and both were happy to work with me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Through conversations and work, I introduced everyone to my field<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: I had already made the entire <\/span><b>\u201cSoviet\u201d layer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which the <\/span><b>underground <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(with its duality) was worked out, and the <\/span><b>average Soviet person<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and versions of their life were determined. <\/span><b>The method of parallel associations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had already been worked out, through which I, by the means of the <\/span><b>Americanisms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noticed on the beach in Berdyansk,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared our visuality with American photographs of the Great Depression<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><b>classic documentary<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salt Lakes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, corresponding to Soviet reality, had already been filmed; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the Ground<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <em>At Dusk<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had already been created, dealing with <\/span><b>historical changes, memory, and war<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There had already been three series with <\/span><b>texts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and there had been such series as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandwiches <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suzy and Others<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with elements of active male and female <\/span><b>nudity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And there were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luriki <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sots Art<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, corresponding to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the cultural Soviet codes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There were <\/span><b>sex-aesthetic<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not I<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and there was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crimean Snobbism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was a play and posing of &#8220;<\/span><b>someone else&#8217;s life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; <\/span><b>There had already been many <\/b><b><i>different developments and techniques<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In photography, I had already had my own large photographic field and already had a lot of exhibitions, including those at MoMA (New York), Carnegie Museum (Pittsburgh), MIT (Boston).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am very glad that the work <\/span><\/i><b><i>turned out well<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that it turned out <\/span><\/i><b><i>like this<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!
