About the artist
Untitled
Dmytro Starusiev (b. 1984, Makiivka, Donetsk region) is a Ukrainian artist. He began his career in the field of cinema. Since 2005, Starusiev has been interested in photography, starting work on the Donbas series (2005–2014). In 2012, he graduated from the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography with a specialization in directing. From 2016 to 2018, he studied in Sergiy Bratkov’s workshop at the Rodchenko Art School of Photography and Multimedia.
Starusiev combines a wide range of media, from video and stained glass to analogue photography. In his photographs, Starusiev emphasizes their materiality, physical presence, and tactility by creating large-scale prints. This effect is enhanced by the abstractness of the images, which are born in dialogue with the photographic process itself.
He was nominated for the ContempUkrPhoto Award by Bird in Flight (2019) and the PinchukArtPrize (2018 and 2020).
