About the artist

Portrait of Jury Rupin

Alexander Sliussarev (1944-2010, Moscow) was a Moscow photographer. Got engaged in this practice at the age of 14, when got his first camera — “Junnost” (rus. for Youth). As a teenager, showed his works at the workshops organised by Sovetskoe Foto magazine, where he was adviced to go to the photographic department of the Committee of Youth Organisations, which had been established before the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students. He participated in his first exhibition — “Our Youth” — when he was 18. The same year, in 1962, his works were published for the first time in Sovetskoe Foto, in its March issue. He studied Italian at Maurice Thorez Moscow State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages and consequently worked as a translator.

He first came into the limelight at the exhibition during Dzintarzeme (Amber Land) festival in Orge, Latvia. It brought Sliussarev a recognition of one of the central figures of Moscow photography. In 1970s was a part of the Group of Four (“Група чотирьох”, sometimes also mentioned under the Lithuanian translation of the title — “Keturi”), founded together with photographers from Chernivtsi — Boris Savelev, Vyacheslav Tarnovetsky, Sergei Lopatiuk. In 1987 he joined another group — “Direct Photography” (Непосредственная фотография), where Boris Mikhailov, Alexey Shulgin, Igor Mukhin, Vladislav Efimov, Ilya Piganov and Sergey Leontiev. Apart from the work of a translator, taught Italian. Fully dedicated himself to photography since 1992.

Created a recognizable style of shooting, which combined mundane subjects — daily things, textures or cityscapes — with monumental, laconic compositions, which invested trivial object situations wih specific visual significance. The very desire to underline the orderliness, harmony of contemplating insignificant things prompted the author to choose the square format for his works from 1970s-1980s, taken with his medium format camera Rolleiflex Automat 6×6. Accentuating the formal aspect of a shot (by nuancing textures, lights and shadows, rhythms of lines) amplified the dualistic nature of photography, in which a photographed object “turns into a symbol of itself and along with that preserves its direct meaning”[1]. The created gap results in visual and semantic tension, which Sliussarev called “metaphysical photography”.

Sliussarev visited Kharkiv several times — he was acquainted with numerous local authors, like Boris Mikhailov, Anatoliy Makienko, Jury Rupin, Igor Manko, Oleg Maliovany. They admired Sliussarev’s talent for immaculate construction of frame: on the pages of his Viscidity series (1982) Mikhailov characterizes him as “amazing photo-composer”.
